Subreddit analytics, explained
Subreddit analytics measures a community’s size, reach and activity. Members are the accounts that have joined. Weekly visitors is Reddit’s seven-day estimate of unique visitors, smoothed over 28 days. Posts and comments count what was written in a stated week, and unique contributors counts the distinct accounts that wrote it. Each answers a different question.

01Community size
What is a member on Reddit?
A member is an account that has joined a subreddit.
Reddit’s older name for members was subscribers. The count says how many accounts have joined. It does not say who is reading or writing this week, and it can fall as well as rise.

- Treating members as the people who visit or take part. Joined accounts and current readers overlap, but they are separate counts.

02Current reach
What are weekly visitors on Reddit?
Weekly visitors is Reddit’s estimate of the unique visitors a subreddit had over the past seven days.
Reddit bases the figure on a 28-day rolling average and says it leaves out bots and anonymous browsing in its apps. Visitors do not have to be members, so the figure can sit above or below the member count.

- Seven days of reach, smoothed over 28 days. Oscylo dates each reading by the day it was read.
- Common mistake
- Adding readings together. Neighbouring readings overlap, so two weekly readings are not two weeks of visitors.

03Activity volume
How is subreddit activity counted?
Activity is posts plus comments, counted over a stated period. Oscylo counts complete Monday to Sunday weeks in UTC.
A post is a new submission and a comment is a reply to a post or to another comment. Their sum is also called contributions. Most of the volume is usually comments, so it helps to read the two separately.
- Time basis
- One complete week, dated by the Sunday it ends. Reddit’s own weekly contributions counter covers a rolling seven days and leaves out removed items, so the two need not match.
- Common mistake
- Reading one busy week as growth. A news event, a season or a change in moderation can lift a single week without changing who takes part.

04Participation
What is a unique contributor?
A unique contributor is an account that posted or commented at least once in a stated period.
Each account counts once however much it wrote, so an account with one comment and an account with a hundred are both one contributor. Readers who never post or comment are not counted, and an account is not a verified person.
- Time basis
- One complete week. Weekly counts cannot be added into a monthly total, because the same account can appear in several weeks.
- Common mistake
- Calling contributors active users or distinct people. The count is of accounts that wrote something.

05Activity per account
What are contributions per contributor?
Contributions per contributor is posts plus comments divided by unique contributors, for the same week.
It is the average number of items written by each account that took part. A higher figure means the accounts that took part wrote more each, not that more accounts took part, and it says nothing about quality.

- One week for both figures. Contributor counts end earlier than activity counts, so Oscylo reads the newest week that has both: the week ending Sep 27, 2026.
- Common mistake
- Dividing the newest week of activity by an older week of contributors, or reading the average as the typical account. A few very busy accounts can lift it.

06Who makes the posts
What is posting concentration?
Posting concentration is the share of posts written by the busiest posting accounts. Oscylo reports the busiest 1%.
Profiles show it as Most active 1%: the average weekly share of posts written by the most active 1% of the accounts that posted. It counts posts, not comments. A higher share means posting leans on a small group, which does not by itself make a community healthy or unhealthy.

- Common mistake
- Reading it as a share of all activity. Comments are left out, and the busiest 1% of posting accounts is not the busiest 1% of commenters.

07Change over time
How is subreddit growth measured?
Growth is the percentage change in a named measure between two periods, so name the measure and the baseline every time.
Members, weekly visitors, unique contributors, and posts and comments can each move in a different direction. On profiles, activity growth compares the newest four complete weeks with the same four weeks a year earlier. Trending ranks four-week averages of weekly unique contributors against the same period a year earlier.

- Four complete weeks against the same four weeks a year earlier, so both fall in the same season.
- Common mistake
- Calling a change in posts and comments audience growth, or treating a large percentage as lasting. A percentage from a very small base can be enormous and mean little.

08Comparing different sizes
What does an indexed chart show?
An indexed chart shows each line as a percentage of its own starting value, so communities of different sizes can be compared by how much they changed.
In Oscylo’s tracker each line starts at 100 on its first positive week in the chosen range, and 150 means 50% above that start, not 150 posts. Use the switch to see the same two communities by actual counts: the larger one sets the scale and the smaller one flattens, which is what an index removes.
- Time basis
- Any chosen range. The first week in the range is the baseline, so changing the range changes every index.
- Common mistake
- Reading equal index levels as equal audiences. Two lines at 120 grew by the same percentage from very different sizes, and a younger community may start later.

Reading the numbers
Reddit traffic is seasonal and nuanced: how to spot irregularities
A change in one number is a reason to look closer, not a conclusion.
Name the window
Say what the number counts and over what period: a dated reading, a rolling average or a complete week. Figures with different windows cannot be divided or compared without saying so.
Compare with the community’s own history
A busy week is only busy against that community’s usual weeks. Open its three-year weekly history before judging the latest one.
Read size, reach and activity together
Members, weekly visitors, activity and contributors answer different questions. A change in one says little until the others are in view.
Look for an event or a calendar effect
A news event, a season, a platform change or a moderation decision can move one week. Compare the same weeks a year earlier.
Wait for it to persist
One high week is a spike. Call a change a trend only when several periods point the same way.

How do I check a subreddit’s statistics?
Open the subreddit tracker and choose a community. Read posts and comments, unique contributors and members over the same period. A full profile adds historical charts, activity measures and a weekly CSV. Try r/worldnews or r/funny to see how these fit together.
Can I track subreddit statistics for free?
Oscylo has public profiles for more than 1,650 communities. They include histories of posts and comments, unique contributors and membership. You can compare communities in the public tracker. Weekly visitors are public for selected communities; they are not available for every profile.
What is the difference between members and weekly visitors?
Members are accounts that have joined. Weekly visitors estimates recent reach, including users who have not joined. A member may not have visited recently, and a regular visitor may never join. The visitor figure is smoothed with a 28-day rolling average, so it is not a direct measure of active members.
Why can weekly visitors be higher than the member count?
People can visit a subreddit without joining it. Popular posts can reach readers through feeds, searches and shared links. Membership and weekly visitors measure different groups, so visitors are not limited to the member count. Compare the dates of the two readings as well.
Are unique contributors the same as active users?
No. Unique contributors counts accounts that posted or commented in the period; it leaves out people who only read. It is an account count, not a verified count of individual people. One person can use multiple accounts, and an account that contributes is not necessarily human.
How do I calculate a subreddit engagement rate?
There is no single standard engagement rate for every subreddit. Name the calculation and its time window. Posts and comments divided by unique contributors measures activity per contributing account. Weekly visitors divided by members is a visitor-to-member ratio, not the percentage of members who visited. Neither measure establishes retention or discussion quality.
Why do Reddit’s weekly numbers differ from a historical chart?
Reddit’s displayed weekly contributions cover the past seven days and exclude removed posts and comments. Oscylo’s historical activity charts count posts and comments recorded for complete Monday to Sunday weeks. The time windows and treatment of removed content differ, so the totals need not match. Reddit’s weekly visitor figure also uses a 28-day rolling average.
Which metric shows whether a subreddit is growing?
First name what is growing: membership, visitors, posts and comments, or unique contributors. Check several periods and compare with the same season a year earlier. Trending compares four-week averages of weekly unique contributors with the same period a year earlier. Most visited ranks weekly visitors; it answers a different question.
Why use an indexed chart to compare subreddits?
An indexed chart makes relative change easier to compare when communities have different sizes. Each line starts at 100 on its first positive reading in the selected range. A move to 120 is a 20% increase from that baseline. Switch to actual counts when you want to compare how many posts, comments or contributors there were.
Can I download subreddit data and charts?
Community profiles offer a weekly CSV with posts, comments, their sum, unique contributors and members where covered. Weekly visitors are not included in the CSV. What is the best metric for tracking a subreddit?
There is no single best metric. Use members for the size of the membership, weekly visitors for recent reach, posts and comments for how much is written, and unique contributors for how many accounts take part. Start from the question you want answered, then choose the measure that answers it.
Why can weekly visitors change every day?
Reddit estimates visitors over the past seven days and averages the estimate over 28 days. The window moves forward each day, so a reading can change even when nothing dramatic happened, and neighbouring readings share most of the same days. That makes the line smoother than a raw seven-day count, and it is why readings are not added together.
Does a spike in posts and comments mean a community is growing?
Not by itself. A news event, a season, a launch or a change in moderation can lift a single week. Check whether unique contributors rose as well, compare the same weeks a year earlier, and wait for the change to persist before calling it growth.
How current are the figures on this page?
Every figure carries its own date. Posts and comments are complete weeks, the newest ending Oct 11, 2026. Unique contributors are counted a little later, so ratios use the week ending Sep 27, 2026. Members and weekly visitors are dated readings, shown with the day each was read.
